Strategies to Strengthen Community Engagement in Social Accountability

Community-based organizations (CBOs) are knowledgeable and experienced when it comes to solving the problems facing their communities. They have a deep understanding of their context, the needs of the people, and the available resources. They hold a unique vantage point over their communities that offers insights often overlooked by external development actors.
The belief that academia or non-profit organizations hold a monopoly on wisdom can be a stumbling block to development progress. Community-based organizations have emerged as catalysts of change, armed with a nuanced grasp of local needs and dynamics. Presuming to know what is best for a community from an outsider's vantage point undermines the essence of genuine problem-solving. There is therefore a need to shift perspective to an approach rooted in community or citizen engagement in a bid to promote social accountability.
How can other actors interacting with CBOs enhance community/citizen engagement and, in return, promote social accountability? The answer lies in building partnerships, having the willingness to listen, learn, and amplify the voices of CBOs, and providing a platform for their insights to be heard on broader stages.
